Me and Pam are planning a small tour to the furthest Easterly point in the EEC (main land). It's in Finland on the Russian border. We shall be landing at Rotterdam on Saturday 4th August and arriving at the Easterly point around the 12th.

If any of our Finnish or Swedish friends care to ride a few miles with us then it would be excellent (maybe a flocking on the Russian border).

Hi Steve. Have you set a date for arriving to Turku from Koekar? I live in Turku (H on your route map) and if you are arriving during weekend and if it's not raining cats and dogs, I'll be more than happy to join you guys for some riding.

If you're arriving early hours and miss your breakfast at ship, I can recommend a very nice cafeteria near by :

Link (riding directions)

It's called Cafe Manuela and opening hours are monday to friday 8am to 8pm and from saturday to sunday 10am to 7pm.

Hei Sami

Mita kuuluu my friend, and before you ask I'm so glad to get a response for this thread from Finland "Kiitos". Thanks for the cafe recommendation, we will probably need a strong caffeine fix after "rough seas rough seas" from Stockholm.

Sami we are on the overnight ferry, and land in Turku Thursday morning 09/08. We are two bikes Paul's is a America and ours is an SE.

You are most welcome to come and ride a Finnish mile or three with us, are Finnish miles as long as Swedish miles? We are heading for Varkaus via Hameen Linna castle, we have to be in Varkaus for big big party "lots of kippis".

See you

Steve

Steve, it's not the "rough seas" you'll need to worry about ... it's the bar.

I've crossed over from Stockholm a couple of times and the people on board sure knew how to have a good time.

You'll absolutely love coming out of Stockholm where the vessel sort of threads it's way through and out of the peninsula.

I've not yet heard duration and dates for my summer vacation but if it's on 9th of august, I'll be happy to join you guys to Hameenlinna. There's racetrack in the center of Hameenlinna and plan is to go out there and spend a day with camera on the side of the track. I'll let you know when my vacation takes a place.

It's almost a "sport" in Turku to cruise from Turku to Stockholm, especially when you're between 18 to 25 of age. You do not want to spend any time on those ships during weekends unless you want to drink heavily Sleeping is out of guestion because there's ship filled with drunk, partying teenagers who will not allow you to sleep

Steve, you might wanna get up early, go to the highest deck of ship and take your camera with you. Scenery is pretty nice at both ends, Stockholm and Turku. Here's on from august 2010, taken another way around, from ground to ship

Thanks Sami for that advice.

We've used this crossing once before a very long time ago, maybe 2004, if my memory serves me right. Yes it's a very awe-inspiring crossing. The four of us are looking forward to it very much. I was only kidding about the rough seas. The last time we used that ferry the crossing was as smooth as a baby's bum, but things can change. We will keep our fingers crossed for a smooth crossing. We shall definitely still call in that cafe for a coffee/tea.

So hopefully we shall meet you there.

Ride smart.

And a Happy Easter to you.

Steve

PS

We are just getting ready for the off on our annual Applecross Oyster Run (see our Applecross Oyster Run thread on this forum). I will not be back on line until after Easter.

Kippis!

Weather is pretty much the same that you are used to have over there this summer. Rain, rain, rain, rain, cloudless spot in the sky, rain, rain, sunny day (wasted it due to hangover ),rain, rain and last but not least, rain. It's a bit early to say what it is going to be in august but I'm keeping my fingers crossed it turns to be better than this flooding july. I'm leaving to Copenhagen tomorrow and coming back in monday. On that time period, southern Finland is forecasted to be sunny and warm. And in Copenhagen.....rain, rain, rain, sunny, rain, cloudy...just my luck

I will give you a ring like we said while we are in Stockholm, our ferry to Turku is Wednesday evening "can't wait". I had a pleasure to meet Steve&Pam and Paul&Julie this morning and rode with them to Hameenlinna which is some ~150km away from where I live. They've had quite poor weather in Sweden but forecast for the next few days in Finland is suppose to be way better. It was very nice to meet someone from the tb1600.com and put names to the faces seen on photos here. Very nice and warm people, I hope to see them soon again. Here's couple of shots from today :

Hi Folks

We are still on our epic journey. We reached our goal at the furthest east in mainland EEC which is in Finland two days ago. We will post photographs when we get home. We are using our friend's Ismo's laptop and internet connection to post this message. We are now travelling with three Goldwing bikes in Finland. The weather is absolutely g o r g e o u s. Today travelling to Tampere and we recorded 28 degrees with clear blue skies and no traffic on the roads. MOTORBIKE HEAVEN!!!!

And a big THANK YOU to our Finnish friend Sami for meeting us and taking us on a fantastic ride to the museum and castle of Hameenlinna. Thank you Sami.

Kiitos

Well, I haven't met you folks but good on yer!

What I've seen of that part of the world has been coastal and west (occasionally or north) of your route and mostly from the sea or up Fjords, but I have had the privilege of a little time on the ground too - the place is stunning. And rugged - I trust you're all proper Yorkshire or Viking stock so you're equal to it! Cheers me up just to think about riding through it, so you guys must be having a blast actually doing it! (Note to self - get your planning act together!) Mind you, how you afford a beer is beyond me - no wonder you're chatting up the locals where ever possible! Have a fantastic adventure and a safe journey.

Well we made it "with a little help from our friends".

What a fantastic adventure. Scandinavia never ceases to amaze us. On the weather front our wettest ride was from Gill and Kinghe's home in southern Sweden where we all had a very boozy night in Kinghe's Jail bar. A converted horse stable which now stables his bikes and copious amounts of whisky. , to Stockholm. That days riding was fouler than a foul thing, hence I cut it 50km short of Stockholm and headed for a dry warm hotel that night.

Then we had Finland warm dry Finland . We met up with Sami77 at Turku for breakfast. Sami the road you led us on to Hameenlinna castle was brilliant. Thanks mate . When we left the castle Sami it did turn a bit nippy on the road to Varkaus

After Varkaus me and Pam (Paul and Julie were now on the home run) did a tour with four of our old goldwing buddies, we were now four bikes in total. Stopping at Koli national park with its stunning vista.

Now it was the turn for the furthest East in mainland EEC. We crossed the 3rd largest lake in Finland the Pielinen "IT WAS MIRROR CALM" then a sand road to our goal. All in stunning tecnicolour + 28c/30c temp. Heaven.

Hi ya Sami

We had a fabulous time, it's one of our all time memorable trips to your part of Europe. Glad you like the photos I've got loads more.

Trailer!!! Well I've not got back to the maker yet, my feet haven't touched the floor since getting home "WORK WORK WORK" but I'm getting there. The fix I did in Germany is still good.
